i met a girl in knoxville a town we all know well and every sunday evening out in her home i'd dwell we went to take an evening walk about a mile from town i picked a stick up off the ground and knocked that fair girl down she fell down on her bended knees for mercy she did cry "oh willie dear don't kill me here ~ i'm unprepared to die!" she never spoke another word i only beat her more until the ground around me with her blood did flow i took her by her golden curls and drug her round and round i throw'd her in the river that flows thru knoxville town go down go down you knoxville girl with dark and roving eyes go down go down you knoxville girl you'll never be my bride i started back to knoxville got there 'bout midnight my mother she was worried and woke up in a fright said "dear son what have you done to bloody your clothes so?" i told my anxious mother i was just bleedin' from my nose i called for me a candle and crawled myself to bed i called for me a handkerchief to bind my aching head i rolled and tumbled the whole night thru as troubles was for me like flames of hell around my bed and in my eyes could see it were about 3 days before this fair girl was found floatin down the river that goes thru knoxville town and all that saw her head down bare knew she'd been a handsome bride fit for any hand or strife but none now with she'd lie they carried me down to knoxville and put me in a cell my friends all tried to get me out but none could go my bail i'm here to waste my life away down in this dirty old jail because i murdered that knoxville girl the girl i loved so well

clover seems like a friendly leaf full round soft and open but they all call it a weed posies understand their purple tears weep beneath gallant thousand year old oak trees barley and hops take the edge off red poppies and white lilies relieve to beg to borrow to soak up grief dirt your natural enemy is the seed choke the host bite the hand that feeds ride the steed til decomposing symbiosis destroys all greed teeming wet receptive heaving suspect duress infested blossoms yellow dropping off humming birds singing elms bellow vines conspire undermine infiltrate tighten like a regime intercept bestow protect breach overthrow and devour me given permission to exist and create but tread softly little snake for others will kill when they see you loving what they can only hate no matter which side you think you defend we'll all meet in the middle at the end

burning all the letters from evan burning all the letters from him burning all the letters from evan there's nothing left to fight over we no longer have to squeeze both of our unmet needs into a bottle of bleach i don't expect huge explosions like i did before tho a loud decent bang might make a nice encore he's found someone else to write to that knows how to nurture and give he's listening to all those same songs with this woman in whose house he lives while i sit here scraping ice off with a janky little shiv my guts all exposed and shiny glistening in the gentle wind this bed is getting smaller our time is growing dim everyone i know is famous now with record deals to revel in they never call me back but they never did to begin with and so few have no children he and i faced death together in may of 2007 and last week he passed by me standing on the train platform he never turned around or said hello just kept walking all those years of us being close for nothing but a ghost
